Husbandry

Everyday care of livestock is no simple task.

Animal husbandry integrates a range of disciplines from nutrition, health maintenance and disease prevention, appropriate housing and climate control, proper handling facilities and techniques, sanitation and other factors.

The needs of research animals rise to a far higher level with requirements for precise care, established veterinary protocols, special facilities and transportation, strict compliance to government regulations and all the documentation that goes along with it and much more.

Exemplar Genetics provides animal husbandry services specifically designed for research animals that allow clients to focus on breakthrough laboratory results.

Our carefully selected, strategically located animal husbandry sites near Sioux Center, Iowa and Flandreau, South Dakota offer a range of options and herd redundancy for clients.

Flandreau is the site that houses Exemplar Genetics’ own Yucatan Miniature swine herd. The facility on 11 acres has the capacity for additional herd development and management.

The multi-structure, 12-acre Sioux Center operation, like its sister locations, is designed for swine breeding, farrowing, piglet processing and herd care. Like the Franklin and Flandreau facilities, it is a perimeter- and climate-controlled, restricted access site.

All three sites are Public Health Service assured facilities, which is a requirement for National Institute of Health funded projects. Each site also is accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, which is the private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs.

Our standard per diem arrangement includes breeding and farrowing; age-appropriate, bio-secure housing; sound nutrition; basic vaccinations and veterinary care; documentation consistent with USDA animal welfare guidelines; additional documentation consistent with Investigational New Animal Drug (INAD) requirements; health reports at time of sale or disposition; information from quarterly testing programs and other services.

Retaining Exemplar Genetics’ animal husbandry services enables discoveries by allowing our clients to focus on the research they do best.
