Standard Models
Exemplar has developed numerous minipig models of disease over the years that are now commercially available. The models span a broad range of indications and genotypes. From elucidating previously unknown disease mechanisms to supporting drug development from early preclinical stages through to approval, Exemplar minipigs are enabling discovery, and more.

Custom Models
Exemplar is the world’s commercial leader in the development of gene-edited minipig models of human disease. Exemplar provides an end-to-end solution, with gene engineering/editing, minipig cloning, housing, characterization, and preclinical research - all under one roof.
We start with background genetics. Exemplar owns a herd of Yucatan minipigs from which it has developed several validated cells lines, and most of our models utilize these Yucatan minipig genetics. Additionally, Exemplar has access to Göttingen minipig genetics via license from Ellegaard Göttingen Minipigs. Contact us to discuss which genetics are right for your model.
The next step is the specific modification. Exemplar has extensive experience generating specific point mutations, insertions, deletions, transgenics, and humanized genes. Quality control is an important part of Exemplar’s process. We work to ensure you have only the modification you want.
Exemplar uses somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), also referred to as cloning, to produce the initial gene-edited minipigs. Correctly edited cells serve as the nuclear donor, ensuring that all offspring carry the desired modification. SCNT is also useful for generating large cohorts of specific genotypes and/or sexes.
Characterization Services
Exemplar has over 16 years’ experience characterizing newly developed minipig models, and we have developed significant capabilities and expertise during that time. We work closely with our clients to fully understand newly developed models and to advance their utility for mechanistic discovery and preclinical research applications. As every model’s characterization needs are different, please contact us to discuss your specific needs.
Housing
Exemplar has almost 50,000 square feet of biosecure housing facilities to accommodate your chronic drug study or longitudinal natural history study.
Our facilities boast full accreditation by AAALAC International ensuring adherence to or surpassing all necessary regulatory and animal welfare standards.
Preclinical Services
Exemplar Genetics offers a comprehensive suite of services tailored to our clients’ preclinical research needs. From small molecules to viral vectors and lipid nanoparticles, Exemplar can accommodate dosing and efficacy studies of any size and length. Onsite MRI, ECHO, fluoroscopy, treadmill and gait analysis are a few of our capabilities.
